Where to start, we had 3 days with Desi in Sumba and I cannot recommend having her guide you around wonderful Sumba anymore. She knows everything about this fascinating island! My partner and I did a 3 day tour with Desi and I can honestly say it’s one of the best travel decisions we have ever made. Much like some other reviewers, normally our preference would be to travel independently but we both agreed we got infitinitely more out of our time in Sumba with Desi as our guide than we would have alone. She took us to a great mix of popular and less-visited places, and was so enthusiastic to share her knowledge of the beautiful place she calls home. Desi is also well known in most of the villages and places she took us to, which helped a lot with treading the fine line of acknowledging local customs and being a respectful tourist. On top of that, she is generally just a lovely person who was a pleasure to spend time with and we were both very sad to say goodbye to her after our tour. I’d recommend Desi to anyone visiting Sumba.
My friends and I had the BEST time on our tour days with Desi. We shared a few things that we were interested in seeing then she decided the order and suggested some extra things we didn’t know to ask about. If she has a plan, just say ‘Yes!’ because she really knows what she’s doing ☺️
Normally we would have liked to explore around ourselves with a scooter or motorbike, but we were so glad to book this experience. We learned so much about the island in such a short amount of time — about the nature, the food, the Ikat weaving, the Marapu beliefs, the traditional villages, the societal structures. We never would have done this many things or learned so many important pieces of Sumba culture without booking.
Desi knows all the right times to visit the best attractions (when to go to Waikuri for the high tide, which beach or hills to go to for sunset, and which place to eat for good local meals). And while we did a lot of things in a short amount of time, they never felt rushed.
At the end of our experiences with Desi and Rio (our great driver), we all agreed she’s the best tour guide we’ve ever had. If you’re staying in Sumba, you absolutely should book as soon as possible!
We had an absolutely amazing experience exploring Sumba with Desi and Mike! Over the course of five days, they showed us the beauty of the island, from stunning beaches to the main towns and villages, while also teaching us about local customs and traditions.
Desi is a fantastic guide—knowledgeable, friendly, and always attentive to our needs. She and Mike recommended the best places to eat, sleep, shop, and even where to get a relaxing massage! Mike, the driver, made us feel completely safe with his excellent driving skills, even on the island’s more challenging roads.
If you’re planning to visit Sumba, having a guide is essential. Navigating the local culture, language, and finding all the must-see spots can be challenging on your own. Desi knows incredible, hidden, non-touristy places that would be impossible to visit without her expertise.

We spent over a week touring Sumba from west to east based on the Pasola Festival. Desi our guide was such a lovely and helpful person. Great English and excellent knowledge of the local traditions and customs. She was able to get us into into some truly amazing upclose and personal experiences in ceremonies and villages. Sumba is such an amazing island and Desi was able to bring in to life for us. Often when we travel it can be like a flu on the wall watching, on this trip I felt like a fly in the soup swimming… cooking in local villages, helping classes in local schools, hanging out in villages watching families going about everyday things. Just delicious…
Desi was our tour guide for 6 days. Usually we travel independently but this Sumba trip was such a well organise, interesting tour we could not have experienced without lovely Desi- even though we speak bahasa indonesia. We highly recommend to travel with Desi to get real insights in culture and customs, visit traditional villages and being welcomed, integrated. I extremely enjoyed cooking in a village the traditional way: a recepy probably hundreds of years old. Desi showed us beautiful landscapes. Due to cultural reasons, it is incredibly difficult to be a female guide in Indonesia, yet Desi has overcome many challenges to do a job that she loves, breaking many taboos and surviving several uncontrollable events that have threatened the tourism industry lately.
